“Get up, sleepyhead.” I slap Cammie on her delectable rear, and chuckle when she groans. “You wanted a moneyless date, and I planned one, so come on. Time to make memories.”

I bound off the bed and collect our clothes. I put mine on, and lay hers on the bed next to her. After another round of “rewards,” we both collapsed, but I’m full of energy and ready to date my Balloon Girl.

She groans and sits up, scraping the bedhead off her face. “What time is it?”

I glance at the bedside clock. “Nearly ten.”

She gasps. “I slept all night?”

“Ten PM.”

Blinking like a confused kitten, she exclaims, ”It’s too late for our date.”

“Do you like cake and ice cream?”

“Not at ten o’clock at night.” Her stomach growls and she slaps her hands over it.

I laugh. “Come on, Balloon Girl, let’s get some food into you. Clothes optional.”

She rolls out of bed and into her clothes. I should have hidden them.

I’m in the kitchen when she joins me. Her hair’s been combed and she looks like my Balloon Girl again. I can’t wait to get her back in bed and make her all messy again.

“I’m excited for our date, Zeb. What did you plan?”

“I thought about your Iditarod dream and decided our theme would be Alaska. When I was a kid, I heard a story about children back in the 80s who walked to school days after a volcano erupted in Alaska. They had to wear COVID-type masks anytime they went outside, because the ash falling from the sky wasn’t really ash. It was aerosolized stone, like pumice and glass. It can shred your lungs if you breathe in too much. So, anyway, thinking about that volcanic eruption, I thought it might be fun to—”

She claps her hands in glee. “We’re going to make a papier mâché volcano!”

“That’s right, Balloon Girl.”

“My fifth-grade class made one. It was so much fun. How do you want to start?”

“We were going to start from scratch, but I had Danny—”

“Poor Danny.”

“I had Danny make a small version last night. Considering the time, I thought we could just add a few strips of paper and set off an eruption or two.”

I cross over to the butler’s pantry and pull out Danny’s miniature version. Cammie’s already tearing strips of newsprint, so I stir up the goop from earlier. We perch on barstools and dredge the paper through the paste.

“I love using my fingers as a squeegee,” she says, smoothing her strip over Danny’s model. I’m having too much fun watching her have fun to dip my hands in the goo, too.

But she’s not going to let me get by with that.

“Oh, no, you don’t, Mister. You already had poor Danny do the dirty work. You’re not going to distance yourself from me tonight. Join me. Get dirty with me.”

“Music to my ears, Balloon Girl.”

“Music! That’s what we need,” she says, skimming another strip. “This project is screaming for Unchained Melody.”

“Alexa,” I order into thin air, “Play Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers.
